Haridwar is the gateway to the four pilgrimages of Uttarakhand. It’s also your starting point on the journey to the sacred sources of the Ganga and the Yamuna Rivers. This holy city is home to some of the Most sacred Hindu rituals. Round the year, devotees from all over the country flock here in their thousands to perform “Poojas” or prayers. Renowned for the Maha Kumbh Mela which appears Every 12 years and the enchanting “Aarti” at Har Ki Pauri which captives the beholder with hundreds of burning wick lamps floating down the Ganga, this town has been distinguished for centuries in the Indian society.
According to the mythology it is known as Kapilastaan. legend goes that the suryavnshi Prince Bhagirath performed penance here to salvage the souls of his ancestors who had perished due to the curse of the sage Kapila. The penance was answered and the river Ganga trickled forth from Lord Shiva’s locks and its bountiful waters revived the sixty thousand sons of King Sagara. Mythological, drops of nectar churned out from the primordial ocean fell at the four sites of the Kumbh mela including Haridwar. The Kumbh mela, happening once every 12 years and the ArdhKumbha Mela Coming once every six years are big draws. One of the oldest living cities, Haridwar has been in people’s mind from the period of Buddha to the British advent and now even is the 21st century. Besides being a religious place, it has served as the center for learning arts, science and culture.
Har Ki Pauri
Hari ki Pauri ghat was built by King Vikramaditya to commemorate the descending of Ganga after years of difficult prayers and fasting done by his ancestor Bhagirathi. Lord Vishnu is believed to have left his foot prints on a rock at this ghat. Everyday at twilight the Har ki Pauri ghat comes to life with singing prayers and lit up lamps along the Ganges where people in hundreds and thousands view this mesmerizing and cleansing ritual. It is believed that the one who bathes at Har ki Pauri gets rid of all sins and completely cleanses their soul. Floral tributes and lit up diyas floating on the Ganges is the most enchanting sight one gets at this ghat. During the highly sacred religious fair of Kumbh Mela and Ardh Kumbh Mela, crores of devotees and pilgrims as well as tourists flock to the place to become a part of this surreal spectacle and to seek spiritual peace.
Chandi Devi
Standing atop the Neel Parvat, the Chandi Devi temple was built in 1929 AD by the king of Kashmir Suchat Singh. It is believed that the main statue of goddess Chandi devi, who killed the demon brothers Shumbh-Nishumbh, was laid here in the 8th century AD by Adi Shankracharya. The Chandi Devi temple can now be reached by a ropeway as well. Chandi Devi Temple, located on the top of Neel Parvat, Chandi Devi Temple is one of the major tourist attractions in Haridwar. It is also major religious site of this town. This is around 3 km from Chandighat. It is one of the Shidhh peeth. The temple is devoted to Goddess Chandi. The main temple is situated on top of Hill peak. Present structure was constructed by King of Kashmir Suchan Singh. Along with Maya Devi and Mansa Devi, Chandi Devi completes the trio of Siddhpeeth.
Mansa Devi
Situated on the southernmost hill of the Shivalik ranges is the Durga temple called Mansa Devi. One can reach this temple either on foot or by a cable car. Perched on Bilwa Parvat, the temple provides a panoramic view of the Haridwar city with the Ganges flowing in its middle. The temple is known for being the holy abode of Manasa, a form of Shakti and is said to have emerged from the mind of the sage (Rishi) Kashyapa. Mansa is regarded as the sister of the Naga (Viper) Vasuki. The term Mansa means wish and it is believed that the goddess fulfils all the wishes of a sincere devotee. Devotees who want their wishes to be fulfilled by Mansa tie threads to the branches of a tree located in the temple. Once their wishes are fulfilled, people come back again to the temple to untie the thread from the tree.
Sapt Rishi Ashram & Sapt Sarovar
It is at this place that Ganges is believed to have divided itself into seven small streams to not to disturb the Sapt (seven) Rishis meditating and worshipping here. Saptrishi Ashram is an old beautiful ashram located at 5 km from Haridwar on the banks of Ganga (Sapt Sarovar). Established by Goswami Guru Dutt in 1943, Saptrishi Ashram is a well maintained complex with several rooms to stay. A residential hostel and sanskrit school is located within the complex for poor children. Devotees hold this ashram in high esteem due to its religious significance. If you are interested in yoga and meditation, you can make a visit to this ashram and attend classes offered on a regular basis.
Rajaji National Park
The Rajaji National Park, spread over an area of 240 sq km, houses the Chila wildlife Sanctuary and is situated at a distance of 10 km from Haridwar. Situated on the banks of River Ganges, the sanctuary is a haven for a large number of animals. This biodiversity park boasts of nearly 23 mammals and about 315 fauna species. The river in the park houses large number of fishes and fauna in the water. At Chila you can have the pleasure of spotting leopard, tigers, jungle cat, herd of elephants, wild boar, stags, spotted deer, sloth bear, monkeys, woodpecker, king cobra etc. During the monsoons the park remains closed and otherwise it is open after sunrise and closed after dusk.
Shanti Kunj
Shantikunj is a world-renowned ashram and the headquarter of All World Gayatri Pariwar (AWGP) located in Haridwar. Bharat Mata Mandir
Bharat Mata Mandir, which is also known as Mother India Temple, is one of the most visited temples located in Haridwar. The temple is dedicated to Bharat Mata by her devoted patriotic nationals. This religious shrine was founded by Swami Satyamitranand Giri. In 1983, this temple was inaugurated by Late Prime Minister, Smt. Indira Gandhi. As the conception of Bharat Mata predates the Partition of India, she is intended to represent "Aryavarta", the motherland of Hinduism in Hindu Nationalism, not merely restricted to the secular Republic of India, and Bharat Mata remains a symbol of the "vision of a unified motherland" in Hindu nationalist thought. Bharat Mata temples exist in the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi University, inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in 1936 and another in Haridwar built in 1983 by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).
Piran Kaliyar Sharif
The ‘Dargah’ of Hazrat Makhdum Allauddin Ali Ahamed ‘Sabir’ on the outskirts of Roorkee town is a worth-visit-place for every visitor. It is situated towards the south of Haridwar. This place is one of the living examples of unity between the Hindu and Muslim religions. The dargah of the Alauddin Ali Ahmed Sabir Kalyari, who was also the successor to Baba Farid and the first in the Sabiriya branch of Chishti Order. The dargah was built by Ibrahim Lodhi, an Afghan ruler of Delhi. Famed for its mystical powers that fulfill the desires of the devout, the Dargah is visited by millions of devotees from all religions from India and abroad. The Urs is celebrated at this Dargah every year, from the first day of sighting the moon to the sixteenth day during the Rabeeull month of the Islamic calendar.

Daksha Mahadev Temple
Daksha Mahadev Temple, which is also known as Daksheswara Mahadev Temple, is one of the oldest temples Located in Kankhal in Haridwar and is one of the Places to see in Haridwar.Dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Sati, the temple was named after Goddess Swati’s father, King Daksha Prajapati. The temple houses a Yajna Kund and also has a thousand year old Banyan tree. The Daksha ghat on the left of the main temple allows devotees to take a dip in the holy Ganga River. The temple becomes exceptionally beautiful with elaborate decorations during the Maha Shivaratri. The Daksha Temple carries more significance due to the fact that it occupies a place in the list of five sacred sites in the town of Haridwar in Uttarakhand.
Parad Shivling
Parad Shivling is a unique Shivling worshipped at Harihar Ashram and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Shivling was offered first prayer during the Kumbh Mela in 1986. The name Parad Shivling literally means Mercury Shivling. This holy Shivling is made from 151 kg of pure Mercury. Thousands of devotees visit the Harihar Ashram to offer prayers to the Parad Shivling and the shrine is also known as Paradeshwar Mahadev. There is another beautiful temple of Maha Mrityunjay in the ashram premises dedicated to Lord Shiva and there is also a big Rudraksha tree.
